You have probably heard of cosmetic dentistry. It is essentially any dental procedure that works to improve your smile. Now you could argue that any smile is beautiful, but if you have dull or misshapen teeth, you may have a different opinion. There is a wide range of cosmetic dentistry treatments that can give you a smile makeover. Not all dentists offer all treatments, but the following are some of the cosmetic dentistry procedures that can help to give you a better smile.

Dental Crowns

Crowns are both cosmetic and restorative, in that they can restore your bite along with your appearance. They are made of porcelain, and cover your entire tooth to correct problems like cracks, chipping, discoloration or broken teeth.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are, as the name suggests, thin porcelain shells that are placed over the front of your natural teeth in order to hide defects like chipping, gapping, staining or misalignment. They are somewhat less expensive than dental crowns, since they are just partial restorations.

Teeth Whitening

Sometimes, all you really need to improve your smile is a teeth whitening treatment. Of course you have seen the ads on television for over-the-counter whitening products – don’t waste your money. You will never get a satisfactory whitening from OTC strips, but you will from professional dental whitening treatments, which can brighten your teeth by several shades.

Dental Bonding

Bonding involves the use of a tooth-colored material to fill in chips or mild cavities. It can also be used to close up gaps between your teeth, giving you a less irregular smile. Bonding material is not as strong as porcelain, so this type of treatment will not last as long as veneers, but you should still get several years out of a bonding treatment.

Dental Implants

You could think of dental implants as the Cadillac of cosmetic dentistry. With implants, a cosmetic dentist removes the damaged roots of your teeth and inserts titanium screws in their place to support crowns. The implants and crowns will never decay, but you do have to still brush and floss, and get professional cleanings, because if you should develop gum disease, your implants could fail.
