Usually, the baby teeth will begin to come in somewhere between the ages of six to nine months, and by the time your child has his or her first birthday, you can expect to see four or more teeth. These small teeth need to be properly cleaned, so that is the point where you should bring your child in for their first dental appointment.
The baby teeth will continue to come in, probably quite rapidly at this point, until all 20 have erupted. Keep in mind that the baby teeth are the foundation for the 32 adult teeth to come, and it is just as important to care for them. So, by the time your child reaches age two, you should begin teaching him or her how to brush properly. It is best to use a small brush with soft bristles, and just a small amount of toothpaste. Your child will not master the brushing technique overnight, so you should be prepared to offer help.
